Dominique Moreau has the same philosophy as Cédric Bouchard at Roses de Jeanne, right down to naming her winery after her grandmother – Marie Courtin. She is a 100% Bio-dynamic producer in the full sense of the word, and even trys to use no sulphur in a couple of her cuvees, providing the wines are suitable.
Mme. Moreau produces a series of single-vineyard, single-variety, single-vintage, zero-dosage Champagnes from biodynamically-grown grapes that are farmed and created with meticulous care. The Champagnes are beautifully focussed with an undercurrent of minerality. For these like-minded growers, their house style expresses their terroir, their plantings, and their dedication to producing exquisite, singular wines.
Champagne Marie Courtin is located in the village of Polisot in the Côte des Bars in the warmer southern part of the Champagne region. This area is particularly prized for its Pinot Noir grapes as evidenced by the bigger houses sourcing many of their red grapes from the area.
Most of Dominique's wines come from a hillside vineyard of 40-45 year old, massale-selection Pinot Noir in Polisot. The combination of low yields, clay-limestone soils with bands of Kimmeridgian, and an east/southeast exposure gives the wines both intensity and precision, with a wonderful minerality at their core.
The grapes are all harvested by hand before being fermented with natural yeasts that have been selected from their vineyards and cultivated separately. These native yeasts are used for both the primary and secondary fermentations. Lastly, there is no dosage added upon disgorgement.
These are great food wines. Dominique recommends that her wines be served in traditional white wine glasses to allow the wines to develop with air. Like many of our Champagne houses, we are on allocation. There are just 60 bottles of Resonance and 12-24 bottles of the rest.
