Charly Thévenet is Jean-Paul Thévenet’s son. “Well, that’s nice” I hear you say, closely followed by “Who the heck is Jean-Paul Thévenet?!”
J-P Thévenet is one of the big names in Beaujolais, being one of the founders of the bio-dynamic movement, and one of the first to move away from carbonic maceration to Burgundy techniques. He is also one of Kermit Lynch’s ‘Gang of Four’ with a highly sought after, sold out production of around 2000 cases. Charly is following closely in his dad’s organic footsteps.
After working with his father for many years, Charly went to work for Marcel Lapierre (one of the other ‘Gang of Four’ producers), before going out on his own. He will of course inherit all his father’s famous Morgon vineyards in due course, but until then, he is more than happy in Régnié. Production – 600-1100 cases depending on vintage.
As the next generation of the natural wine movement, Charly seems to have inherited his father’s talent. He uses biodynamic farming techniques in the vineyard - no adding synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides to the vines. He harvests late, sorts the grapes ruthlessly, adds minimal sulphur, ages the wine in four-year-old Burgundy barriques, and bottles his wines unfiltered. If you’re looking for a wine that offers 1er Cru Burgundy style and quality at half the price, look no further.
