Every wine lover has heard of Barolo and Barbaresco, and most have heard of ‘the Langhe’. The wines of Roero on the other hand have always lived in the shadow of Barolo, and are virtually unknown. There are always exceptions, and the Correggia winery is a beacon of light. It is acknowledged as not only the best producer in the area, but also as one of the very best northern Italian wineries. Fortunately for us, coming from Roero means the prices are just as modest as the people who make the wines.
Known by his peers as “The Comet of Roero”, the late Matteo Correggia is regarded as the benchmark wine producer for the Roero region which lies just north of Barolo. In 2001, Matteo Correggia tragically passed away just as he entered Piedmont's winemaking elite. It is a real privilege for me to offer you these wines.
With the help of Giorgio Rivetti of La Spinetta, Matteo’s wife Ornella has taken over the estate, and is carrying on her husband's passionate desire to expand the reputation of the Roero region. The wines have not only retained their high overall quality level but they now reflect the fine tuning that Ornella and her winemaker Luca Rostagno are doing, and the wines are consistently rated amongst the best in the region.
The Italian wine bible Gambero Rosso had this to say:
"The Correggia winery continues to set the pace for other wineries in the area, providing topics for discussion and food for thought. This is the way of things ever since the much-mourned Matteo showed just how much potential there was in an apparently marginal area. Today, Ornella and her exceptional staff are champions of sustainable viticulture. Correggia's natural approach means working the land in the full awareness of the surrounding environment. It's another field in which Correggia is leading the way, sensibly and without ostentation."
“The late Matteo Correggia was, and remains, the spiritual leader of the region.” Antonio Galloni
