SCHMITT Alsace

Rittersberg or ‘mountain of the knights’ is essentially a monopole being owned almost exclusively by the Schmitt family. In Scherwiller, below the ancient Ortenbourg castle, Jean-Paul Schmitt grows Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Sylvaner, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir in sublime granite based soils. The terroir and the wines it produces here are so good that Rittersberg is set to be promoted to Grand Cru status in the upcoming Alsace reclassification. This is great recognition for what the Schmitt’s achieve, but it may mean some price increases. Please note that this is J-P Schmitt, not Schmitt Sohne, which is a German winery.
